Getting a DOT/CDL Physical
A CDL physical is the medical exam required to obtain your commercial driver’s license. Also known as the DOT physical, the point of the physical is to determine your fitness to perform your job. The demands of a commercial driving job can take a toll on your body and your health, so the Department of Transportation created a standardized test to keep you, and others on the road, safe.
Remember, you cannot get a CDL physical by just any doctor. They must be a US Department of Transportation certified medical examiner. We know how important it is to keep an up-to-date certificate. We will assist you through the process quickly and painlessly.
What Does the DOT/CDL Physical Cover
The DOT certified physician wants to make sure that you are healthy enough to do the job of a commercial driver. That does not mean you need to be in the best shape of your life, but you will have to pass a few routine tests.
Preparing for Your DOT/CDL Physical
We try to make the process as quick as possible. We want to get you back on the road as soon as possible. If you pass your CDL physical with no restrictions, you won’t have to come back for another 24 months. And don’t worry about keeping a record, we’ll keep your information on file.

If you drive a tow truck, big box truck, etc. that does not require a CDL you may be required to have a non-cdl physical. These physicals are essentially the same as a CDL physical and include a medical certificate and medical card.
Who can perform DOT/CDL Medical Exams ?
Starting May 21, 2014 you can only get medically certified by a federally certified medical examiner – called a CME or Certified Medical Examiner. That examiner will have a National Registry Number, which must be included on the information on the medical certificate issued to a driver.
Medical professionals who participate in the CME program may be MD, DO, DC, APN, or PA.
How long is my medical card valid ?
2 years if the driver meets all the FMCSA standards
If the driver meets standards, but periodic monitoring is required for certain conditions, a medical certificate will be issued for a limited time period. Depending on those conditions the period could be 1 year, 6 months, or a one time 3 month certification.
